On 28 February 2026, Rockdale Opera proudly presented the world premiere of The Monk — a gripping new chamber opera by Australian composer Steven Stanke, inspired by the 1796 gothic novel by Matthew Lewis. Described as an “amazing evening of singing,” this dark, psychologically charged work captivated audiences at Rockdale Town Hall.
Daniel Verschuer commanded the stage in the demanding titular role, charting the Monk’s dramatic descent with power and intensity. Elizabeth Cooper was hailed as “mesmerising” as Matilda/Rosario — both seductive and terrifying — while the rich four-hand piano score brought this haunting new Australian work vividly to life.
We are especially grateful to the 16 generous backers who contributed $1,442 to help bring this premiere to the stage — with special thanks to Julia Ruhl, Karen Ellis, David Brennan, Debbie Rae and Bronwen Needham. Your belief in new Australian opera truly made a difference.
To our patrons, donors, volunteers, cast and creative team — thank you for helping us bring this new Australian work to the stage!
